I had seen a few granny square sweaters and shrugs, and I wanted to try making one. This is a bit more of a "recipe" than a pattern. I have written down exactly how I made one that fit me, but I also have notes on where to make adjustments and try it on to see if you need to make those changes.
Materials Needed:
- 6mm Crochet Hook
- Red Heart Comfort Yarn-Hot Pink, 1 ball
- Red Heart Super Saver Black, approximately 1.5 skeins
- Stitch Marker
- Tapestry needle (for weaving in ends)
Summary:
You can really use any granny square to do this. It doesn’t have to be the same size or style as mine. The idea is to make a large granny square, then cinch the top and bottom a lot and the sides a little less. So if you are using a granny square you already have or one that’s different in size, just start with "Securing into Sweater Shape."
Abbreviations:
st = stitch
ch = chain
sc = single crochet
dc = double crochet
sl = slip stitch
Pattern:
Main Body:
Row 1: ch 4, sl in 1st ch to form a ring. Ch 3(counts as stitch), 2dc, ch2, *3dc ch2* repeat from * until you have 4 clusters of dc, sl to top of ch3.
Row 2: sl st to the corner ch2 space. Ch3 (counts as stitch), 2dc, ch2, 3dc, ch1 in the corner space. *In the next ch2 space 3dc, ch2,3dc, ch 1* and repeat from * until you reach the ch3 and slip stitch to the top.
Row 3-END**: sl st to the corner ch2 sp. Ch3 (counts as stitch), 2dc, ch2, 3dc, ch1 in the corner space. In the next ch1 space 3dc ch1, then next ch2 space 3dc ch2 3dc and continue around until you reach the ch3 and slip stitch to the top.
**It was 31 rows for me, but you can make this bigger or smaller depending on your needs. To check the size, follow the steps below to secure the shrug with stitch markers so you can try it on and see if you want it to be bigger/smaller.
Securing into Sweater Shape:
Fold your square in half, making sure where your yarn is attached is one of the "open" corners, shown on the bottom of my images.
Starting from the fold on one side, count 6 ch1 spaces and place a marker on the 6th space. Place marker. Repeat for other side. Also, place markers on the 2 "open" corners.
The section at the top near the "fold" that is 6 ch1 spaces from the fold is going to be the arm area/sleeve. Be sure to try it on once you have the stitch markers in place to make sure it will fit. You want the arm holes to be loose so the shrug is slouchy.
Now, we will start by crocheting through BOTH layers as we continue the granny stitch.
***Ch 3, then 2dc in corner, through both layers. *Ch 1, 3 dc in ch1 sp, repeat from * until you reach the next marker. Now, only work through the FRONT layer. Continue around until you reach the last cluster that was worked through both layers, ch 1 and sl stitch to the last dc made through both layers. Fasten off. Attach yarn to corner on other side and repeat from *** to seam the other side.

Rnd 1: Attach yarn to the first ch1 space on front side of one of the sleeves. Ch 3, then 2dc in ch1 sp. *Ch 1, 3 dc in ch1 sp, repeat from * until you reach the end of the round, ch 1 and sl to top of ch3.
