I remembered seeing crocheted scrunchies before, I even made some in my high school days. So I sat down and knocked out a couple of these without realizing what a great TOY they would be for my 3-year-old. The next day I made a few more so he had a nice rainbow assortment. He stacks them, he wears them, he counts them, he tells me their colors, it's hours of entertainment!
This pattern is very basic and customizable.
Materials Needed:
- Small amounts of Worsted Weight Yarn, I just used some scrap balls I had in my stash, most of it was probably Red Heart Super Saver.
- 6mm Crochet Hook
- Hair ties or rubber bands, I used these.
- Stitch Marker (optional)
- Tapestry needle (for weaving in ends)
Abbreviations:
Ch = Chain
HDC = half double crochet
Sl st = slip stitch
Pattern:
Make a chain long enough to wrap around your hair ties. I didn't have any hair ties, so I used 2 rubber bands and I did ch 7. Wrap the chain around your hair ties or rubber bands, taking care not to twist it. Sl st in the first stitch to form a ring. In same st HDC. HDC around (7 st).
At this point, you could place a stitch marker and keep count of your rounds, but I did not bother. I just started working in the round without keeping track until there was enough to go around my rubber bands and it be a little bit "frilly" but not too much. Once you've done enough you can either fasten off and leave a long tail to sew the two ends together, or you can just slip stitch through both layers of the ends to close. There will be a seam if you do this, but I didn't feel like pulling out a tapestry needle so I opted to slip stitch and the seam isnt noticable enough to bother us.
