I wanted to make an Open Granny Square Bottom Bag, but I couldn't find a written pattern anywhere. Maybe I didn't look hard enough, but I ended up making up this one instead. I used an entire skein of variegated Red Heart Super Saver yarn for the body and a small amount from a random skein in my stash for the handles.
Materials Needed:
- 236 yds of the main color (I used Red Heart Super Saver Antique) Worsted Weight Yarn
- Less than 1 skien of accent color used for handles.
- Tapestry needle (for weaving in ends)
Summary:
Make a granny square with 10 rows (needs to be an even number, this will leave you with an odd number of holes/chain spaces on each side). Note the center chain space before you get started. Work as you would a normal granny square, however, when you get to the center chain space, skip the ch 1 AND skip that ch1 space entirely, then go to the next ch 1 space and continue as normal. Be sure to keep your yarn tight. Do this for 10 more rows. When you get to the end, do 1sc in st, 1sc in each ch1 sp and 3sc in each ch2 space. When you get to the first sc, start using a stitch marker to mark the end of the round and work in rounds. For the next 3 rows, do one sc in each st.. On the second row of this I started with a solid color, as I had used all the variegated. On the next row, chain 74 to make the strap then reattach at the next corner. Do 1 sc in each stitch until you get to the next corner then chain 74 and reattach to the next corner and then sc around until you get back to the first stitch. Continue to do this until the strap is your desired thickness.
Row 1: ch 4, sl in 1st ch to form a ring. Ch 3(counts as stitch), 2dc, ch2, *3dc ch2* repeat from * until you have 4 clusters of dc, sl to top of ch3.
Row 2: sl st to the corner ch2 space. Ch3 (counts as stitch), 2dc, ch2, 3dc, ch1 in the corner space. *In the next ch2 space 3dc, ch2,3dc, ch 1* and repeat from * until you reach the ch3 and slip stitch to the top.
Row 3-10: sl st to the corner ch2 sp. Ch3 (counts as stitch), 2dc, ch2, 3dc, ch1 in the corner space. In the next ch1 space 3dc ch1, then next ch2 space 3dc ch2 3dc and continue around until you reach the ch3 and slip stitch to the top.
Rows: 11-20: Take note of the center ch1 space on each side, you may mark it with a stitch marker if it helps. Continue as you have above, only when you reach the center ch1 space, do not ch1 after the last 3dc and skip that ch1 space completely and continue to do 3dc in the NEXT ch1 space.
Row 21: ch 1 and 1sc in each stitch, 1sc in each ch1 space, and 3sc in each ch2 space.
Change colors
Row 22-24: sc in first stitch from previous row and place marker, you are now working in the round. Sc in each stitch around.
Row 25: sc in next 6 stitches to get to the top of the corner.ch 74 then sl st to reattach at the top of the next corner, taking care not to twist the chain. 1sc in next sc until you reach the top of the next corner. Ch 74 again then sl st to reattach at the top of the next corner, taking care not to twist the chain. 1sc in each remaining stitch
Row 26: sc in each sc and sc in each ch all the way around.
Row 27-28: sc in each st around.
Sl st to the first stitch of row 28, fasten off, weave in ends.
